It was quite special when I was asked if I could help to close the Great Central Road that the airplane from the Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS) could land on the only two kilometers paved stretch of the 1’100 gravel road from Yulara (Uluru) to Laverton. Special for several reasons: Well, there’s anyway not much traffic at all, but yeah, given Murphy’s Law, I’m sure there would be a group of tour buses exactly when the airplane is about to land if you wouldn’t close the road. Special as well because if you imagine your heart gets freaky a bit and there’s no one beside your employee and completely by hazard a trucker driver and a motorcyclist and you depend on them.
All we can hear is the noise of the turbines of the aircraft, the thick clouds are too low to even think about landing on this narrow road. Even with perfect visual conditions this would be a challenge. Slowly the sound of the turbines disappear, all that’s left behind is hope that the doctors advises on the radio and the morphine bring relieve.
